Ranchi. With the help of a patient century from top-order batsman Joe Root (106 not out) and his two useful partnerships, England scored a respectable score of 302 runs for seven wickets on Friday on the first day of the fourth Test against India.

Root, who was struggling for runs so far in the series, showed his old natural game, ignoring the baseball style and hit nine fours in his unbeaten 106 runs in a restrained innings of 226 balls. Root handled England with five wickets in the first session.

He made an unbeaten partnership of 113 runs for the sixth wicket with Ben Fox and 57 runs for the eighth wicket with Olly Robinson. Fox scored 47 runs while Robinson was at the crease with 31 runs at the time of stumps.

At one time it seemed that England might not be able to play even two sessions today. But Root has put England in a strong position, partnering with Foakes, Tom Hartley and Robinson.

For India, budding fast bowler Akashdeep took three wickets for 70 runs in his debut match, Mohammed Siraj took two wickets for 60 runs while R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took one wicket each.
