New Delhi. English team assistant coach Marcus Trescothick has encouraged Jason Roy to maintain a positive outlook despite being dropped from the ICC Men’s World Cup squad.
Jason Roy was included in the initial 15-man squad for England’s World Cup preliminary squad.
However, he was dropped from the World Cup squad in the final days and Harry Brook got his place.
Roy has been troubled by a back injury for some time. Therefore, he was also left out of England’s four-match ODI series against New Zealand. This is why the selectors chose Brook as his replacement.
“I haven’t spoken to Jason, he’s obviously disappointed but you’ve got to be positive he can still make an impact on the game,” Sky Sports quoted Trescothick as saying.
After being left out of the World Cup squad, Roy declined the opportunity to represent England in a three-match series against Ireland. It was a decision that could raise concerns about his future with the national team.
Roy has performed brilliantly in ODIs this year and has maintained an average of 46.33 and a strike rate close to 100 in six matches. He played a key role in England’s historic victory in the 2019 World Cup held in his home country. In which he scored a brilliant 443 runs at an average of 63.28 and strike rate of 115.36, which included one century and four half-centuries.
On the other hand, there is Brook who has struggled in the 50 over format. He has averaged just 20.50 in six matches, including the recent disappointing series against New Zealand.
England and New Zealand will clash in the opening match of the World Cup 2023 on October 5 in Ahmedabad.
