Hospice: England’s wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow, who is going to play his 100th Test this week, has dedicated this achievement to his mother who defeated cancer and who has been his strength in difficult times and the binding force for his family.

Thirty-four-year-old Bairstow will become the 17th England cricketer to play 100 Tests and will achieve this feat in the fifth and final Test to be held here against India.

He told ‘Telegraph Sport’, “When I play, I often think about my father. But now I think more about my mother, who did not let all this happen to affect us. Kept us together as a family. That has been my strength.” When Bairstow was eight years old, his father, former England wicketkeeper David, committed suicide. His mother Janet did not let the family fall apart despite battling breast cancer twice.

This cricketer said, “My mother has been synonymous with courage.” She worked three jobs because she had two children under the age of ten at the time. She took me from Leeds United to Hennigley (where he played youth football).” He said, ”She was a victim of cancer twice. He is very strong and beating cancer twice is a testament to his courage.” Bairstow said that he wanted to become a Test cricketer since childhood after watching his heroes.

He said, “I did not grow up watching ODI cricket. I have seen Test cricket which meant everything to me. I saw Michael Vaughan, Marcus Trescothick and Kevin Pietersen play. I also wanted to be a part of that team.” He said, ”This is going to be an emotional week and I will thoroughly enjoy it.”
