Ethiopia’s Hayle Lemi among men and Aberash Minsewo among women won Mumbai Marathon.

Mumbai As expected, Ethiopia’s runners dominated the Tata Mumbai Marathon as defending champions Haile Lemi Berhanu and Abrash Minshevo won the men’s and women’s titles respectively on Sunday. Among Indian male runners, Srinu Bugatha had the best performance with a timing of 2:17:29 seconds. After him, Gopi Thonakal (2:18:37) stood second and Sher Singh Tanwar (2:19:37) stood third.

There were two Indians in the top 10 elite male runners with Srinu at eighth and Gopi at 10th. Indian Army’s Srinu said after the victory, “I was aiming to make a course record but the last five kilometers did not go well. Gopi and Srinu were walking together for 27 kilometers but due to fitness related problems, Gopi had to take some breaks. Gopi said, “I was having muscle strain, I had to stop for a while for stretching. ”Ethiopian athletes won the elite race in all categories.

In the men’s elite category, Lamy registered his second consecutive win in the ‘Gold Label Road Race’ with a time of 2:07:50 seconds. Haymanot Alev (2:09:03) finished second and Mitku Tafa (2:09:58) finished third. In the women’s category, Mincevo won the gold medal with a timing of 2:26:06 while compatriot Muluhabat Tsega (2:26:51) was second and Medhine Bezene (2:27:34) was third. Nirmaben Thakor Bharatji (2:47:11) stood first among Indian women in the elite race. Among Indians, the silver medal was won by Reshma Kevate (3:03:34) while the bronze medal was won by West Bengal’s Shyamali Singh (3:04:35). In men’s half marathon, Sawan Barwal won gold, Kiran Matre won silver and Mohan Saini won bronze medal. Amrita Patel secured first place in the women’s half marathon. Poonam Sonon won silver and Kavita Yadav won bronze medal.
