Modi was born on 29 November 1963 in Delhi. He belongs to one of the prominent business families of India. Krishna Kumar is the elder son of Modi and Bina Modi. His grandfather had founded the Modi Group business conglomerate and the city of Modinagar. Modi studied at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla and St. Joseph’s College in Nainital. He studied Electrical Engineering and Business Administration in the US from 1983-1986.
He attended Pace University in New York for two years and Duke University in North Carolina for one year, but did not graduate from either. Modi was arrested in 1985 on a number of charges, including cocaine trafficking. He returned to India in 1986 and joined the family business. Modi married Meenal Sagarani, daughter of a Sindhi Hindu businessman based in Nigeria, in October 1991. After marriage, he moved to Mumbai. The couple has two children – son Ruchir Modi and daughter Aaliya. Minal passed away in 2018 due to cancer. In July 2022, Modi announced that he was dating Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen. However, later the news of breakup also came.
After returning to Delhi, he joined the family business in 1986. In 1987, he joined the International Tobacco Company Limited and served as its chairman till 1991. In 1989, Modi became a non-executive and non-independent director of Godfrey Phillips India. In February 1992, he became the Executive Director of Godfrey Phillips India and served till August 2010. Modi founded Modi Entertainment Networks (MEN) in 1993, but it went bust after a few years. He later became the President and Managing Director of Modi Enterprises.

He was elected to the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association in 1999, but was later forced to leave the association. He was elected the Vice-President of the Punjab Cricket Association in 2004 and remained in the post till 2008. He became the President of Rajasthan Cricket Association in 2005 and in the same year he also became the Vice President of BCCI.

He invested heavily with the BCCI as the association’s revenue grew 7 times to touch $1 billion between 2005 and 2008. He made his Indian Premier League debut in 2008. He was suspended from the BCCI in 2010 for allegations including money laundering, rigging of the IPL auction and bypassing the Governing Council while taking decisions on matters. He then moved to London and expanded the family business in Europe. In 2013, the charges against him were found to be true and he was declared a proclaimed offender. In London, he lives like a king in a tall building and now when this video surfaced, once again he came into limelight.
