Fine of Rs 66 lakh and 1320 vehicles seized, Kochi’s aggressive fight against pollution and garbage

Kochi: In the last six months, a total of Rs 66 lakh has been collected as fine from people caught throwing garbage in public places in Ernakulam district. Of these, a fine of Rs 40 lakh was imposed within the Kochi Corporation limits. The fine was imposed strictly as part of the Maliniyamukta Nava Keralam campaign aimed at making the state garbage-free by next year.
1,320 vehicles seized in six months
In six months, 1,320 vehicles were seized in cases of illegal dumping of garbage. A total of 3,572 cases were also registered. These figures were presented by District Collector NSK Umesh at the regional review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the Bolgatty Palace Convention Center here on Tuesday.
716 out of 750 garbage dumps were removed
Giving details of the facilities established for waste management, the Collector said that 1,300 small material collection facilities have been established in the district. These include 95 newly established facilities. There are also 119 material collection facilities. There are also 15 resource recovery facilities in the district. The Collector told in the meeting that out of 750 garbage heaps found in the district, 716 have been removed.
The district needs the capacity to process 600 kilo liters of garbage per day.

Work is underway to set up a bioCNG plant
The Collector told the meeting that with the help of Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), work is going on to set up a BioCNG plant at the Brahmapuram Municipal Solid Waste Management Facility. The Collector said that this project included in the Centre’s Atal Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation Mission (AMRUT) scheme will be completed in nine months.
Government came into action after massive fire in Brahmapuram dumping yard
Kochi’s long-pending garbage problem became controversial earlier this year when a massive fire at the Brahmapuram dumping yard exposed poor planning and mismanagement of the facility.
