Former India footballer Parimal Dey passes away at the age of 81

Kolkata | Former India footballer Parimal Dey died here on Wednesday at the age of 81 after a prolonged illness. Born on May 4, 1941, Dey was honored with the title of Banga Bhushan by the West Bengal government in 2019.

Dey performed brilliantly for India in the 1960s. He scored the only goal of the match against Korea Republic in the 1966 Merdeka Cup in Kuala Lumpur to win India a bronze medal.

At the domestic level, he had the distinction of winning the Santosh Trophy twice in 1962, 1969 for his team. Playing as a forward for East Bengal, he scored 84 goals and also captained the club in 1968.

Dey holds the distinction of winning the Calcutta Football League and the IFA Shield three times in 1966, 1970 and 1973, and has etched his name in Indian football folklore by scoring goals in the IFA Shield final against BNR (1966) and Iranian side PAS Club (1970). .

The 1966 CFL was a big tournament for Day as he scored in each of the first nine games.

Apart from these, he also won the Durand Cup (1967, 1970), Rovers Cup (1967, 1969, 1973) for his team. Dey also played for Mohun Bagan in 1971 and again led his team to the Rovers Cup that year.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) condoled Dey’s death.

AIFF President Kalyan Choubey said, “The passing away of former India star Parimal Dey is a great loss to Indian football. He was one of the best planners of the 1960s and remains in the hearts and minds of fans till date.”

AIFF general secretary Shaji Prabhakaran said, “The entire Indian football fraternity is in deep shock at the passing away of Parimal Dey. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.(IANS)
