New Delhi. Former Indian captain Bishan Singh Bedi, who stunned the batsmen with his spinning balls in the 1970s, breathed his last at the age of 77. His international career lasted for 12 years and he led India to memorable victories in many matches.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condoled the demise of former Indian captain and legendary spin bowler Bishan Singh Bedi. Considered one of the greatest left-arm spinners of all time, Bedi died on Monday at the age of 77. He was ill for the last two years and had undergone several surgeries during this period.

Bedi played 67 Test matches for India between 1967 and 1979, in which she scored 656 runs with the bat and took 266 wickets at an average of 28.71.

Born in Amritsar, Punjab, Bedi began his first-class career with North Punjab, before moving to Delhi in the 1968–69 season, making his Test debut for India in 1966.

He was known for his expertise in left-arm spin bowling. He had many techniques including flight, loop and spin to defeat the batsmen at the crease.

Bedi also led Delhi to the prestigious Ranji Trophy title in 1978–79, apart from finishing runners-up in 1979–80. He also had a successful stint playing for Northamptonshire in county cricket in England.

In 102 matches for the club between 1972 and 1977, Bedi took 434 wickets at an average of 20.89, the most by an Indian in the English county cricket circuit.

After his career, Bedi started coaching young cricketers, with Maninder Singh and Murali Karthik among his students who played for India. Not only this, he also coached Punjab, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir teams in domestic cricket, in which Punjab won the Ranji Trophy in 1992-93.

He was the manager of the Indian team for some time in the 1990s. He was a fearless voice on all matters related to sports. During his playing days and even after that, he used to express his views openly on every issue.

Bedi was also respected for her intelligence, knowledge and immense love for sports. He received the Arjuna Award in 1969, Padma Shri in 1970 and CK in 2004. Naidu was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Bedi had been unwell for some time and had to undergo several surgeries, including a knee surgery which took place in late September this year. He is survived by his wife Anju and two children, including a daughter Neha and his son film actor Angad.
