Former Tokyo Olympic organizing committee member Haruyuki Takahashi appeared in Tokyo District Court on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to Games-related bribery charges. Takahashi was arrested more than a year ago and it is unclear when his case will conclude. The defense will present its case early next year.
Takahashi, a former executive of Japan’s prestigious advertising company Dentsu, is accused of taking a bribe of 198 million yen ($1.4 million) in exchange for awarding the Olympic contract related to the 2021 Tokyo Games. Takahashi appeared in court just nine days after a separate hearing on criminal bid-rigging charges against Dentsu and five other companies was postponed.
The hearing will resume early next year. “I profess my innocence on all charges,” Takahashi told the judge before the prosecution presented its case. It was purely business and it was not a bribe.
