Paris (Uttam Hindu News): Alexander Zverev on Wednesday entered the semi-finals of the French Open 2023 after defeating Argentina’s Tomas Martin Hverry in the quarterfinals. The 22nd seed from Germany overcame Hévery 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Court Philippe Chatrier. He will face either Holger Rune or Casper Ruud in the semi-finals.
Zverev said after the win, “The conditions are much better for me during the day. The ball is very quick and bounces high. I love playing on clay and the conditions get better during the day. I am in the semifinals of Roland Garros and I am happy about it.”
Zverev reached the semifinals at Roland Garros last year as well, but then retired due to a heel injury during his match against Rafael Nadal. After six months away from the court, Zverev picked up a racket again in January and slowly found his rhythm. Zverev said, “The last one year was the most difficult year of my life. I love tennis so much and my competitiveness was taken away from me. I am very happy to be back at this stage.
Meanwhile, Beatriz Haddad Maia became the first Brazilian woman to reach the semifinals of the French Open after defeating Ons Jabour of Tunisia in the quarterfinals. In the match played at Court Philippe Chatrier, Haddad Maiya defeated Zabyor 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 in two hours and 29 minutes. Haddad Maiya will face Poland’s Inga Swiatek in the semifinals on Thursday, coming off a one-sided quarterfinal win over Coco Gauff of America 6-4, 6-2.
Haddad Maia is also the second Brazilian woman to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam event. Prior to her in the Open Era, only Maria Bueno (1968) has represented Brazil in the semi-finals of the US Open.
Prior to Rola Garroon, Hadday Maiya had neither advanced past the second stage of a Grand Slam event nor won a single set against Jabayor. It was Jabyor who took the first set of the quarterfinal as well, but Haddad Maiya came back brilliantly to take the win.
Haddad Maiya held strong serve after losing the first set. Jabyor earned two break points when the match was tied at 5-5, but Haddad Maaya denied him both times. Jabyor himself saved a break point, but a strong forehand from Haddad Maia in the tie-breaker won the set.
In the third set, Haddad Maaya raced to a 3-0 lead, but Jabyor fought back to take a game. When Haddad Maiya was ahead 5-1, Jabyor made four unforced errors while serving, which put Haddad Maiya in the semi-finals.
