New Delhi | From his amazing performances on the cricket field to his down to earth image, Sachin Tendulkar has won immense love and appreciation from fans across the world. Sachin’s bat has been a magic wand that has mesmerized the fans and forced them to become die-hard supporters. One such fan is the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.
Lata Mangeshkar is a big cricket fan and has displayed her love for the game many times. Such is his love for the game that he raised funds through a concert to honor the 1983 World Cup Heroes.
Mangeshkar, herself a Bharat Ratna awardee in 2001, could not hide her joy and excitement when she got the news that Sachin would be given the Bharat Ratna.
She said, “I have been saying for three years that Sachin deserves Bharat Ratna. The government cannot get a better opportunity than this to give Bharat Ratna to Sachin.”
Sachin was coming out of the pavilion after playing his 200th and last Test in Mumbai when the government announced Bharat Ratna to him. After this, Sachin became the first player and the youngest to receive this highest civilian honor of the country. He left behind late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Lata Mangeshkar said, “Right now people’s feelings towards Sachin are at their peak. On Friday, Sachin walked out of the field for the last time. The whole country cried to see him. I had never seen such a thing before. I am very happy.” That Sachin has got the Bharat Ratna. He is still young and has many years to enjoy the honour.”
He had expressed disappointment over Sachin’s retirement from cricket in 2013.
When it comes to Sachin fans how can one forget Sudhir Kumar Chowdhary. He had come to meet him cycling from Bihar in 2003 and since then Sachin has helped him get tickets for every India match in the country.
After getting his body painted in the colors of the tricolor in every match, he has been appearing in every match of India since 2002. The name of his idol was as if stuck to his body.
During the 2011 World Cup, Sudhir wore a mini replica of the World Cup on his head. After winning the title at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Sachin invited him to join the celebrations in the dressing room. Sudhir also got a chance to lift the World Cup trophy.
Lionel Cann, former international cricketer from Bermuda, also added his name to the list of Sachin fans across the globe.
When Bermuda played in the 2007 World Cup, they were placed in India’s group. The Bermuda captain had then said that if a catch went in the direction of Cain, he would drop the catch to see Sachin bat.
Despite his retirement from cricket, Sachin continues to be an inspiration to many young cricketers and fans across the world. We are going to celebrate Sachin’s 50th birthday (April 24). It is clear that his fan following has only grown over the years and his impact on cricket and Indian culture will be felt for generations to come.
