New Delhi . On his 74th birthday, India’s legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar shared the fondest memories of his illustrious cricketing career. “There has never been a more special moment in my cricketing career than when Kapil Dev lifted the ODI World Cup trophy in 1983.
Speaking to Star Sports, Gavaskar said, “I have never seen a more special moment in my cricketing career. Even today when I think of that moment, tears come to my eyes. After all these years, whenever I think of that moment when Kapil Dev lifted the trophy, I still get teary eyed.”
In an international career spanning over 16 years, Gavaskar played 233 matches and also won the 1983 ODI World Cup in England, defeating the West Indies by 43 runs at Lord’s. He played 125 Tests and 108 ODIs.
He scored 35 centuries in international cricket – 34 in Tests and one in ODIs, besides 72 half-centuries – 45 in Tests and 27 in ODIs and captained India on several occasions from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. Gavaskar does commentary now.
He said, “Look, you can do anything in cricket, but the joy you get from it, especially when your team, when your country reaches such heights, you cannot measure. The most important moment for me is the 1983 World Cup win.”(IANS)
