NBT Sports / Agencies, New Delhi: It happened about 14 years ago. India achieved the target of 316 given by Sri Lanka on the basis of Gautam Gambhir’s unbeaten innings of 150 runs. Gambhir was adjudged the player of the match in that one-day match played at Eden Gardens in the year 2009, but at the time of award distribution, Gambhir appealed to give the award to Virat Kohli, the young player of the team, giving proof of being a ‘gentleman’. Who scored 107 runs in that match and that was his first ODI century. Gambhir’s move painted a beautiful picture of Indian cricket across the world, but what happened between Virat and Gambhir at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium on Monday night has put a few spots on the same beautiful picture of Indian cricket. Now these stalwarts will have to make every possible effort to avoid making a big league like IPL street cricket.
Virat Kohli was in his old aggressive form while fielding in the low-scoring encounter between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Lucknow Supergiants (LSG). During the match, Virat also had an argument with Lucknow batsman Naveen-ul-Haq. Perhaps this brawl and Kohli’s celebration went berserk to the LSG players, staff and especially the team’s mentor Gautam Gambhir sitting in the dug-out, and by the time the match was over, hearts erupted. Naveen and Kohli once again had a small argument after the match when the players of both the teams were shaking hands with each other. Matters came to a head when Gautam Gambhir stopped Lucknow’s Caribbean player Kyle Myers from talking to Virat and took him away. Soon after, Gambhir was seen walking towards Kohli and then the world caught a glimpse of the ‘Gully Cricket’ brawl in IPL.
This is not the first time: Both Kohli and Gambhir have played together for India and the Delhi team. Remember, in the final of the 2011 World Cup, both of them also made an important partnership of 83 runs for the third wicket for the team. But, then something happened that the distance between the two kept increasing. There was also a clash between these two 10 years ago in 2013 during the match played between RCB and Kolkata Knight Riders in Bengaluru. Gambhir was then the captain of the Kolkata team. Earlier, when the match between Lucknow and RCB was played in Bengaluru, Gambhir was seen gesturing towards the audience to keep quiet. RCB director Mike Hesson is considering Gambhir’s ‘action’ as the root of the tussle.
Virat became a ‘philosopher’: After the match and the clash, RCB posted a video on social media. In this, Kohli said, ‘Friends, it was a very sweet victory. Sweet victory. Let’s go ahead If you say something then be ready to listen otherwise don’t say anything. After this Kohli put a post on his social media handle. In this he quotes the former Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius who ruled from 161 to 180 AD. He was also a philosopher. The former captain said, ‘Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see happens in a context, not necessarily true.’

Kyle Myers and Kohli walk together for a while after the match. Myers asked Kohli why he was continuously abusing him, to which Kohli said why he (Myers) was staring at him. Earlier, Amit Mishra had complained to the umpire that Virat was continuously abusing number 10 batsman Naveen-ul-Haq. Gautam felt that the situation would worsen so he pulled Myers from there and told him not to talk. Then Virat said something. Gautam said what are you talking about. On this Virat said that I did not say anything to you, why are you entering. On this, Gautam said that if you have spoken to my player, then you have abused my family and Virat said that you should take care of your family. On this Gambhir said that now you will teach me. After this both were separated.

Kohli missed more!
Following the clash, Virat and Gambhir were fined 100 per cent of their match fee for breaching Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct. On the other hand, Naveen has been fined 50 percent of his match fee. Due to this fine, Virat lost about Rs 1.07 crore, Gambhir about Rs 25 lakh and Naveen about Rs 1.79 lakh.
