The Google Doodle depicts an orange cat eye frame with Shinasi’s face inside a lens. On this day in 1907, Shinasi was born in New York to immigrant parents. His father was a Sephardic Jewish native of Türkiye. His mother was from Salonika.
Shinasi studied painting in Paris and then ventured into art. She then returned to the US to pursue her dream at The Art Students League in New York. He began his career as a window dresser in Manhattan. He had the opportunity to work with many prominent artists, including Salvador Dali.
According to the Google Doodle, “Shinasi was inspired to create the cat-eye frame when she was working as a window display designer. She had a women’s eyeglass store where she worked. She only had round frames.” So Shinasi had to come up with something, in which he copied the Harlequin mask he had seen people wearing in Venice during the Carnevale festival.
Shinasi begins making paper prototypes for the cat-eye frame. However, it was rejected. According to his son Terry Sanders, the reason for rejecting the design was because it was too sharp. Eventually a local shop owner listened to her and made a deal to manufacture her exclusively.
Harlequin glasses became popular among women in America by the late 1930s. For this he was also awarded the Lord & Taylor American Design Award in 1939.
