Mumbai (Uttam Hindu News): Five-time IPL champion Mumbai Indians has announced fast bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya as its new captain for the 2024 season of the tournament. Hardik Pandya has replaced Rohit Sharma, who has commanded Mumbai Indians for 10 years and also made the team champion five times. The franchise said in a statement that appointing Hardik as captain is a part of their significant leadership change ahead of the 2024 IPL season with an eye on the future. The announcement comes just ahead of the IPL 2024 player auction to be held in Dubai on December 19.

Hardik led Gujarat to the IPL title in 2022 in his debut season and was player of the match in the final against Rajasthan Royals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
In 2023, under Hardik’s captaincy, Gujarat made it to the IPL final for the second time, where they finished as runners-up against Chennai Super Kings. In both the IPL 2022 and 2023 seasons, Gujarat had topped the points table in the league stage under Hardik’s leadership. Later, on 25 November, a day after the retention window ended, Mumbai traded Hardik to Gujarat.
It also marks the end of an era. It has been a memorable journey for Rohit captaining Mumbai for ten years and leading them to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. The 2013 IPL season earned widespread praise from Ricky Ponting for being tactically sharp and making rapid changes to bowling and fielding placements with an emphasis on firmly controlling the game’s proceedings.
Overall, Rohit captained 158 IPL matches in which he won 87 matches, lost 67 matches and four matches ended in a tie. His winning percentage was 55.06. His leadership has not only led the team to unparalleled success but also cemented his place as one of the finest captains in the history of the IPL. Under his guidance, MI became one of the most successful and beloved teams of all time.
