Left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gaikwad feels that the Indian women’s cricket team, which missed out on a Commonwealth Games gold medal, will put up a stellar performance at next month’s Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. Last year, the Indian team missed out on a gold medal in women’s cricket’s Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham, losing to Australia in the final. The team has lost three finals of major tournaments in recent years. The Indian women’s team qualified directly for the quarterfinals of the Asian Games on the basis of the ICC (International Cricket Council) T20 International rankings.
We will win gold in Asian Games
“Definitely, we will win the gold medal in the Asian Games,” Gaikwad told PTI in an interview. He said, ‘We have played against all the big rival teams, but we cannot keep thinking about that, we have faith in our team, we can win the gold medal.’ Gaikwad was not part of the squad on India’s last tour (against Bangladesh), in which the team won the T20 International series 2–1 while the ODI series was drawn 1–1. Gaikwad said, ‘I was in rehabilitation during the Bangladesh tour and was resting. It was not that I was dropped from the team.
The spinner, who has played two Tests, 64 ODIs and 55 T20 Internationals for India, is currently busy with the Women’s Premier League team UP Warriors’ off-season camp for Indian players. He said, ‘We have done a very good job in the camp. We do not need to work on any particular department but can improve those departments in which we could have done better and our focus is only on this. Gaikwad said, ‘Our focus is on improving in all departments, which includes fielding, batting and bowling. Especially the batsmen have tried to work on their strokes.
Harmanpreet will be able to play in the final of Asian Games
Harmanpreet Kaur has recently been banned for two matches for publicly criticizing the umpiring in the ODI match against Bangladesh. She will not be able to play in the quarter-finals which will definitely be against an Associate country and then she will not be able to play in the semi-finals against a Full Member country. The men’s team, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, has got a direct entry into the quarterfinals on the basis of the ICC T20 rankings till June 1. There will be 18 teams in the men’s competition while 14 teams will play in the women’s section.
Women’s cricket will start from September 19
The women’s events will begin on September 19 and end with the gold and bronze medal matches on September 26. The men’s event will begin on September 28 and the final will be played on October 7, a day after the start of the men’s ICC 50-over World Cup in Ahmedabad. If the Indian cricket team qualifies for the final, they will have to play three consecutive days – October 5 (quarterfinals), October 6 (semi-finals) and October 7 (final).
