Rajkot. India have been fined five runs after all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin ran into the protected area of the pitch during the first session of the second day of the third Test against England on Friday.
In the 102nd over of India’s innings, India’s score was 358 runs for 7 wickets. Ashwin played the ball towards the cover region and tried to take a run. During this time, Ashwin was found running in the middle of the pitch in his innings.
This led to India being penalized five runs by on-field umpire Joel Wilson, who spoke to Ashwin before signaling the penalty.
Due to which England will start their first innings at 5/0. India had already received their first and last warning when all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was warned for running on the pitch on the very first day of the Test.
Rule 41.14 which deals with the situation when a batsman has damaged the pitch.
According to the rules: “It is unfair to cause deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch. If a striker enters the protected area to play the ball, he may do so but must leave immediately thereafter. If an umpire If it is believed that his presence on the pitch is without any valid reason, action will be taken against him.”
Law 41.14.2 describes the procedure to be followed in the first such incident, which is a warning to the batting side.
The penalty is set out in Law 41.14.3, which states: “If this fault is repeated by the team in that innings, action will be taken against them.
Till the time of writing the report, India was out after scoring 445 runs in the Rajkot Test.
The five-Test series is level at 1-1 after England won the first match in Hyderabad and India drew level in Visakhapatnam.
