Indian shuttler HS Prannoy had given up hope of winning his next singles title but chief coach Pullela Gopichand infused him with the confidence to end a six-year title drought and assured him that he was a strong player. Prannoy ended a title drought by defeating China’s Weng Hong Yeng in three games in the men’s singles final of the Malaysia Masters Super 500 tournament here on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Prannoy, world number nine and India’s top player, also thanked his former teammate RMV Gurusai Dutt, who turned to coaching after his retirement in June last year, and helped him in times of need. Former Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Gurusai Dutt believes adding a few extra shots helped Prannoy. He told PTI, “He has always been performing well. All he needed was a win. Gopi sir and I felt he was close to it. He has beaten all the top players and it is all about belief.
Gurusai Dutt said, “In this particular tournament, I felt she played some different shots like cross net and drops. He had added some shots that would improve his attack. Gopi sir gave some suggestions and we worked on it when we were in Hyderabad. “But it is difficult to try it in match conditions. It comes from experience. People are not ready for new shots, these players play against each other a lot so these new shots helped.
