New Delhi: Six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom on Thursday denied reports that she has retired from the sport. Mary Kom, 41, does not meet the age criteria to play on the amateur circuit anyway. He said that he has not yet made a formal announcement of saying goodbye to the game. London Olympics 2012 bronze medalist Mary Kom said in a statement issued here, ‘I have not yet announced my retirement and my statement has been distorted. Whenever I have to announce my retirement, I will tell everyone myself.
In fact, during a program in Dibrugarh on Wednesday, Manipur’s flyweight (51 kg) boxer Mary Kom was quoted as saying that due to the 40-year limit for amateur boxers, she was forced to retire. The former Rajya Sabha MP said, ‘I have seen some media reports in which it was said that I have said goodbye to the game, which is not correct.’
She said, ‘I was participating in a school program in Dibrugarh on January 24, where I was cheering the children. I had said that I still have the hunger to reach new heights in sports, but due to the age limit in the Olympics, I cannot participate. However, I can continue my game and my focus is on fitness. Mary Kom further wrote that whenever I decide to retire, I will tell everyone.
He has been away from the boxing ring since losing in the pre-quarterfinals at the Tokyo Olympics. Despite there being no age limit in professional boxing, he has not made his debut in it, hence there has been speculation about his future for a long time. Mary Kom, who has won six Asian titles and six World Championship gold, has also been awarded the Khel Ratna Award. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian honour, in 2020.
