Visakhapatnam. After taking a sensational five-wicket haul in the second ODI against India, Australia pacer Mitchell Starc has revealed that his scheme of bowling full length in powerplay overs has not changed in the last 13 years and it has given him good results. Starc was named player of the match in Australia’s 10-wicket win against India on Sunday. He took five wickets for 53 runs. He has taken eight wickets in the two matches so far in the series.
The pacer’s ability to strike during the powerplay was on display in India. Starc’s four wickets in the second match of the series came during a blistering opening spell that put the hosts on the back foot soon after being put in to bat.
Starc’s ability to swing the new ball and take wickets early in the innings is a quality that has given the left-armer good results throughout his international career. The 33-year-old said he will not change his strategy which has helped him pick up 219 wickets for his country in just over 100 ODIs.
Starc said after the game, my plan has not changed for 13 years. Bowl full length, hit the stumps, try to swing. For a long time my role has been to try and get wickets in the powerplay.
Sometimes it means I’m probably more expensive, but I try to get out all the way, so it’s not a new game plan in the last two games.
When you have a powerful batting unit which India have, if you can take wickets in the powerplay it means we can control the game in some cases, which we did today.
The 33-year-old Stark has played the World Cup twice.
Australia will play only nine more ODIs before the World Cup. Starc can claim an early mental edge for a series win in India.
The fast bowler said, now we are going to Chennai where we have to play the decider, once we get over that game then we will focus more on the World Cup.
There are parts of this series where the World Cup will be on your mind, but I think mainly for this group, we’ve still got a chance to win the one-day series in India, which is very special, Starc said.
