Chennai. Charismatic Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni says rigorous preparation for the Indian Premier League (IPL) pays off and he will take a decision on whether to continue playing in the T20 league in the next eight-nine months.
There were speculations that 2023 would be Dhoni’s last season in the IPL. Under his leadership, Chennai Super Kings entered the IPL final for the 10th time after beating Gujarat Titans by 15 runs in the first qualifier here on Tuesday. Dhoni said after the match, “To be honest, it makes a lot of difference. I am away from home for the last four months. I have been out of home since January and have been practicing since March, so what happens next I will think later.
He said, “I came out of the house on 31 January. After completing work, I started practicing from March 2 or 3. It affects a lot but I have enough time to decide. “The 41-year-old veteran said about retirement,” I don’t know. I still have eight-nine months to decide. Why should I worry about it now? I have enough time to decide. The auction is to be held in December.
Dhoni did not show much brilliance with the bat in this season. He has scored 104 runs in 15 matches so far. Meanwhile, he was also troubled by knee pain due to which he found it difficult to run between the wickets. India’s World Cup-winning captain, however, played all the matches this season. Dhoni said, “I will always be with Chennai Super Kings.” Will be there, whether I play or stay out. I really don’t know.
On Chennai reaching the final for the 10th time, he said, “IPL is too big to say that this is another final. It is more difficult among 10 teams. This has been possible because of the hard work of more than two months and the passion of each and every player. Every player has contributed. Middle-order batsmen didn’t get enough chances but we are very happy to be here.
Dhoni is regarded as one of the best captains in cricket but said he can be a troublesome captain as he keeps on changing bowling and fielding. “You have to look at the wicket, you have to look at the conditions One has to walk accordingly and one has to decorate the fielding accordingly. I can be a troublesome captain because I keep changing fields all the time.
