Ian Chappell fears about the future of ODI cricket, says – Anyone who thinks T20 is better than ODI is an idiot

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell said he fears for the future of the 50-over format because of the attitude of the administrators. His comments come ahead of the upcoming Chappell-Hadlee Trophy T20 series between Australia and New Zealand starting in Wellington from Wednesday. From 2004 till now, Chappell-Hadlee Trophy was played between Australia and New Zealand in ODI format. But, now T20 format has also become a part of it.

Statements from Cricket Australia (CA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said a points system would also be used for future back-to-back ODI and T20 series between the trans-Tasman rivals.

“They definitely have T20 cricket at the top and more and more T20 cricket is being played,” Chappell said on Wide World of Sports (WWOS). 50 over cricket is being played less. Anyone who thinks T20 is better than a 50-over game is an idiot. “The administrators have neglected 50-over cricket and I think they have let it slip to the point where they will not be able to get it recognized again.”

Australia is the current holder of the Chappell–Hadlee Trophy, which was last played for three ODI matches in Cairns in September 2022. Chappell is also not sure that the 50-over format will ever regain the popularity it once had.

Chappell feels that the popularity of T20 and more recently T10 cricket is also a big threat to the ODI format.
