New Delhi | Former Australia wicket-keeping legend Ian Healy has urged Pat Cummins to relinquish Test captaincy and focus solely on his fast bowling skills. Cummins was appointed as Australia’s Test captain in November of 2021. He was made the ODI captain late last year after Aaron Finch retired. The 29-year-old skipper was also the best red ball bowler in the Test rankings until England’s James Anderson dethroned him from the top spot recently.
He is not available for the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against India at the Holkar Stadium in Indore due to a serious family problem.
“I don’t want him to carry the burden of captaincy for too long,” he said. I want him to be in the team only as a bowler. Captaincy creates a pressure and four to five years as a captain is a long time.
He has already done a few years (as Test captain),” Healy said on SEN radio show. Now he is adding (short-form captaincy) to his thought processes after he returned home due to family problems. So yes, I would like to see him as a fast bowler.
Till date, Cummins has taken over 200 wickets in Test cricket at an average of 21.50, the best of any Australian bowler.
Asked who should be the long-term successor to Cummins, Healy pointed out that left-handed batsman Travis Head could be a suitable candidate.
He said, I think Travis Head is very capable. He has led South Australia since the age of 21. He is very capable and has a lot of experience. He is the most different for me.(IANS)
