ICC bans participation of transgender women in women’s cricket

Dubai. The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday decided not to allow transgender players and players who have undergone sex change treatment from male to female to participate in international women’s cricket.

The decision to not allow anyone who has attained male puberty of any kind came into effect after the ICC Board approved new gender rules for the international game.

The decision was taken after a 9-month consultation process with sporting stakeholders.

The new policy is based on the following principles (in order of priority), safeguarding the integrity of women’s sport, safety, fairness and inclusion.

“This means that any male-to-female participant who has undergone any form of male puberty is eligible to participate in international women’s games, regardless of any surgery or gender transition treatment,” the ICC said in a release on Tuesday. Will not happen.”

The review, which was led by the ICC Medical Advisory Committee, was chaired by Dr Peter Harcourt. Pertains solely to gender eligibility for international women’s cricket. Whereas, gender eligibility at the domestic level is a matter for each individual member board, which can be influenced at the local level.

An ICC release on Tuesday said the rules would be reviewed within two years.

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardyce said, “The changes to the gender eligibility rules resulted from an extensive consultation process and are based on science and in line with the core principles developed during the review. Inclusivity as a game is incredibly important to us.” But our priority was to protect the integrity of the international women’s game and the safety of the players.

Pay parity for match officials

The Chief Executives Committee (CEC) endorsed a plan to accelerate the development of female match officials. This includes equalizing match-day pay for ICC umpires in men’s and women’s cricket and ensuring a neutral umpire in every ICC Women’s Championship series from January 2024.
