ICC Ranking: Shubman Gill becomes world’s number one batsman, Babar Azam’s reign ends, Siraj also on top

Indian opening batsman Shubhman Gill And fast bowler Mohammad Siraj on Wednesday reached the top of the list of batsmen and bowlers respectively in the latest ICC (International Cricket Council) ODI rankings.
Gill replaced Babar Azam at the top position while Siraj removed South African spinner Keshav Maharaj from the first position.
Gill, who gave a solid start in many of India’s matches in the current World Cup, ended Babar’s reign. He became the fourth player from the country to hold the top position among batsmen in ODIs after Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli.
Right-handed batsman Shubman Gill had contributed 92 runs against Sri Lanka and 23 runs against South Africa last week. He has scored a total of 219 runs in six innings in the current tournament.
Babar has scored a total of 282 runs in eight innings in the World Cup and has slipped to second place, six rating points below Gill. With this, his reign in the ODI rankings that had been going on for the last two years ended.
Among other Indian batsmen, Virat Kohli has reached fourth position after his brilliant performance in the World Cup, while captain Rohit Sharma is at sixth position. Kohli, who has scored the most runs in ODIs among the current players, is in great form in the World Cup. He scored 543 runs in eight innings at an average of 108.60, which included two centuries and four half-centuries.
Kohli is one rating point behind third-placed South Africa’s Quinton de Kock. Middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer also climbed 17 places to reach 18th position in the rankings.
Pakistan’s openers Fakhar Zaman (up three places to 11th) and Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran (up six places to 12th) are also in good shape.
In the World Cup, Siraj has given runs at an economy rate of 5.23. During this period he has taken 10 wickets in eight matches. Among India’s other bowlers, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has moved up three places to eighth position, while Mohammed Shami has moved up seven places to 10th position.
Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav has also moved up three places to fourth position, while fellow bowler Ravindra Jadeja has moved up eight places to 19th position.
Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan tops the list of all-rounders, while Jadeja is the highest-ranked Indian at 10th position.
Jadeja is India’s third highest wicket taker in the World Cup. He has spent 3.76 runs per over in eight matches and has taken 14 wickets. During this period, he has also scored 111 runs at an average of 55.50. All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who was out of the tournament due to injury, is at 13th position.
