The ICC has recommended a six-team T20 tournament for both men and women to the Games Organizing Committee. According to the news of ESPNcricinfo, the decision on the inclusion of cricket will be taken by the International Olympic Committee (ICC) in October.
Jay Shah joins ICC’s Olympic Working Group
After the decision on this, the organizers will decide on the list of new games by March. After this, it will be confirmed in the IOC session in Mumbai, which is expected to be held around October this year. In a strategic move, BCCI (Indian Cricket Board) secretary Jay Shah has been included in the Olympic Working Group of the ICC.
Greg Barclay is the chairman of the group.
The Olympic Working Group is chaired by ICC President Greg Barclay and includes Indira Nooyi (Independent Director) and Parag Marathe (Former President of the US Cricket Association). Shah was included in this committee keeping in mind India’s ambition of hosting the Olympics in 2036.
Demand to include 8 sports in Olympics
Along with cricket, eight other sports – baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, breakdancing, karate, kickboxing, squash and motorsport – are also competing for inclusion in the programme. Cricket tournament has not been organized even once in the Olympics.
