Birmingham. French Open champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will try to end India’s 23-year wait for a title at the All England Championship starting here on Tuesday. Only Prakash Padukone (1980) and Pullela Gopichand (2001) have won the title for India, while Saina Nehwal (2015) and Lakshya Sen (2022) were the runners-up. The tournament is generally considered quite prestigious in India but is now one of four Super 1000 tournaments in the international calendar.
Satwik and Chirag had won the Super 1000 title in Indonesia last year. He won the French Open title on Sunday night, which has increased the expectations from him. Asian Games champions Satwik and Chirag reached the finals of Malaysia Super 1000, India Super 750 and won in Paris this season. In the first round, they will face Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia here. Last year, the Indonesian pair had defeated Chirag and Satwik in the French Open.
If they win in the first round, they may face Aaron Chia and Soh Wui Yik of Malaysia in the second round, whom they have defeated in the last three matches. Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will face Germany’s Vonne Li in the first round, after which she may face world number one An Si Young of Korea. Sindhu made a comeback at the French Open last week after recovering from a left knee injury but lost in the quarterfinals. Lakshya Sen will play Malaysia’s Ang Ziyong in the first round and may face Dane Anders Antonsen in the second round.
World number seven HS Prannoy will play Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Li Yang in the first round. Kidambi Srikanth will face world number one Viktor Axelsen in the first round while Priyanshu Rajawat will face Indonesia’s Chico Ora Dwi Wardoyo. In women’s doubles, Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will face Indonesia’s Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti in the first round.
