Highlighting the success of the winners of the ‘World University Games’ held in China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that India should never lag behind in sports related to the earth like hockey, football, kabaddi, kho-kho. In the 104th episode of All India Radio’s monthly radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the Prime Minister said the perception about sports among the country’s youth and families earlier has changed and the success of Indian sportspersons in international events is motivating them. In the ‘World University Games’ this year, the country’s talented players have won 26 medals including 11 gold, giving the best ever performance in these games.

Modi said that even if we add all the medals won in all the ‘World University Games’ held since 1959, this number reaches only 18. “Only 18 in so many decades, this time our sportspersons won 26 medals,” he said. The Prime Minister interacted with some of the medal winners of these Games and congratulated them on their success. During this interaction Amlan, an athlete from Assam asked the Prime Minister which sport he liked best. In response, Modi said, “India should blossom a lot in the world of sports and that’s why I am promoting these things a lot.” But hockey, football, kabaddi, kho-kho are games related to our land. We should never lag behind in these.” He said that apart from these, the players of the country are performing well in archery and shooting. Modi said, “I see that our youth and even in the families, the feeling towards sports which was there earlier, is no longer there. Earlier, when the child used to go to play, they used to stop and now a lot has changed.

The Prime Minister said the success of sportspersons is inspiring youth and families. He said, “Wherever our children are going in every game, they come back after doing something or the other for the country. And these news are shown prominently in the country today, are told and are also discussed in schools and colleges. Talking about the progress of Uttar Pradesh winning medals in archery, the Prime Minister said that the players have brought laurels to the country. Made proud. Priyanka, a sprinter from Uttar Pradesh, praised Prime Minister Modi for motivating the sportspersons and said that earlier events like ‘World University Games’ were not much sought in the country but now it is getting support.
