The budget for allowances given to players was significantly reduced from Rs 84 crore to Rs 39 crore. There was also a cut in the budget of the National Sports Development Fund which was reduced from Rs 46 crore to Rs 18 crore. In the last budget, Rs 15 crore was allocated for the Commonwealth Games, which has now been reduced to Rs 0.01 crore as they will not be organized this year.

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha said the increase in funds will help players undergo special training programmes. Usha told PTI, “The positive aspect of the sports budget in this Olympic year is the increase in athlete training programmes. This increase will provide our players with better coaching and sports science support which will improve their performance on the global stage. ”He said, ”This is a positive step towards nurturing talent from the grassroots level. This will also help in finding talent at the grassroots level through the Khelo India programme.
