With the help of half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dubey, India defeated Afghanistan by six wickets with 26 balls to spare in the second T20 International cricket match on Sunday and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. India invited Afghanistan to bat first, which made a challenging score of 172 runs.
India won by scoring 173 runs for four wickets in 15.4 overs. The third and final match will be played on January 17 in Bengaluru. Jaiswal scored 68 runs on 34 balls with the help of five fours and six sixes, while Dubey played an unbeaten inning of 63 runs on 32 balls which included five fours and four sixes.
Both of them made a partnership of 92 runs for the third wicket. For Afghanistan, Gulbadin Naib, batting at number three, scored 57 runs in 35 balls, but if Afghanistan was successful in scoring 55 runs in the last four overs, then the credit for it would go to Najibullah Zadran (23 runs on 21 balls), Mujeeb Ur. Rehman (21 runs on nine balls) and Karim Janat (20 runs on 10 balls).
For India, fast bowler Arshdeep Singh took three wickets for 32 runs. Left arm spinner Akshar Patel again bowled economically and took two wickets for 17 runs in four overs. Indian captain Rohit Sharma could not make his 150th T20 International match memorable and returned to the pavilion without opening the account after being bowled by Fazalhaq Faruqui in the first over of the innings.
This fast bowler dropped the catch of Jaiswal in his next over. However, India’s opening batsman showed his mettle by hitting two sixes in this over. Jaiswal welcomed spinner Mujeeb by hitting three consecutive fours, but Virat Kohli (29 runs on 16 balls), playing his first T20 International match in the last 14 months, could not convert the good start into a big score.
Virat was caught at mid-off by fast bowler Naveen Ul Haq, which ended his 57-run partnership with Jaiswal for the second wicket. Jaiswal along with Dubey entertained the audience by playing long shots.
Jaiswal completed the fourth half-century of his career in 27 balls. After this, Dubey hit three consecutive sixes in this over of Mohammad Nabi. With this, India’s score became 116 runs for two wickets after 10 overs. Jaiswal hit two sixes on Noor Ahmed while Dubey hit three fours on Naveen and completed his third half-century in just 22 balls.
Karim Janat (2 wickets for 13 runs in two overs) dismissed Jaiswal and Jitesh Sharma (0), who came to replace him, in the next over. After this, Dubey along with Rinku Singh (09 not out) took the team to the target. Earlier, India won the toss and decided to bowl first and then put Afghanistan under pressure by taking three wickets within the first seven overs.
Rohit Sharma put leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi (2 for 39) into the attack in the third over itself and he proved his captain’s decision right by getting Rahmanullah Gurbaz (14) caught at mid-on on his second ball. Gulbadin adopted an aggressive attitude as soon as he arrived.
After hitting two fours on fast bowler Mukesh Kumar, Gulbadin sent Bishnoi’s first three balls for sixes and two fours in the next over. With this, Afghanistan was successful in scoring 58 runs for two wickets in the power play. Meanwhile, he lost the second wicket in the form of Ibrahim Zadran (08), who was bowled by Akshar.
As soon as Shivam Dubey caught the ball, he showed the path to the pavilion to Ajmatullah Umarzai (02). With this, Afghanistan’s score became 60 runs for three wickets. Gulbadin hit two sixes in Shivam’s next over and then completed his half-century in 28 balls. Akshar ended his innings.
Gulbadin, while trying to sweep his ball, gave an easy catch to Rohit at mid-wicket. He hit five fours and four sixes in his innings. After this the Indian bowlers did not allow the Afghan batsmen to play freely. Mohammad Nabi, who played aggressive innings in the first match, became Bishnoi’s victim by scoring 14 runs on 18 balls.
