The first match of the three-match ODI series between India and Australia will be played in Mohali on 22 September. Both the teams have reached Mohali. Before the match on Thursday, Australian players sweated profusely in the net. Some players were also seen stretching on the field.
Australia captain Pat Cummins is expected to play in all three ODIs against India after making a full recovery from his left wrist injury. He said that his new ball partner Mitchell Starc will not be able to play in the first match on Friday.
The Australian captain also expressed hope that Marnus Labuschagne will continue his good form in the series against India and strengthen his claim to be in the last 15 players of the World Cup team.
Cummins, who is recovering from a left wrist fracture, said in the pre-match press conference on Thursday, ‘We have a lot of people who are in different stages (of injury). I am feeling quite well. My wrist is fine now. I am 100 percent fit. I hope to play all three matches.
Cummins said that in the context of the long list (of injured players), (Mitchell) Starsey is not available. We will give everyone plenty of opportunities to play matches but will also keep the World Cup in mind. Steve Smith, who practiced on Wednesday evening, has also recovered from a wrist injury.
Cummins said he (Smith) is fine and will play tomorrow. He practiced well and looked 100 percent fit. Labuschagne recently came on as a concussion substitute against South Africa after all-rounder Cameron Green was hit on the head by a ball.
Cummins said laughingly, ‘Marnus’ name is always on my mind, 24 hours a day. He is fantastic. He was our best batsman in South Africa. Not only from batting point of view but his attitude was also excellent in South Africa. I am sure he will get opportunities in the three matches and will push for his place.
Cummins also indicated that Adam Zampa can be used in the death overs against India. Zampa proved to be very expensive in South Africa. He said, ‘If you choose your top four bowlers they should be ready to bowl at any stage.’
He said, ‘Jampa is not only good at reducing the run rate but can also take some wickets in the death overs. So I would not be surprised if we save two, three or four overs from him. Australia wants to win the series but the team does not want the players to get tired in humid conditions before the World Cup.
