Regular use of the sweep shot is not the only way to survive against spinners on Indian grounds, feels former Australia captain Ian Chappell. He said that playing Test in sub-continental conditions requires a batsman to have good footwork to score runs. He said, ‘Sweeping regularly is not right against good spin bowling and whoever says that is giving his own opinion. A player should know how to sweep. They should use the shot, but there are better ways for most.
Questions raised on Australia’s strategies
Ian Chappell further said, ‘Any good spin bowler who gets the ball to bounce can highlight the dangers of sweeping consistently. Australia’s team should have been clear about what kind of batting strategies needed to be used in India. Closely, watching the ball is most beneficial. Chappell told the big media cricket house, ‘Once a batsman understands the slightly slower Indian pitches, he can choose shots better to score runs. Then he can frustrate even the best spinners.
India ahead 2-0 in Border Gavaskar
After losing the First Test in Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs within three days, Australia lost the Second Test to India in New Delhi by six wickets, which meant that their chances of winning the Test series were over as India won the Border Test series. Gavaskar has retained the trophy. Trailing 2-0, Australia will now take on India in the third Test starting March 1 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Chappell also cited Indian captain and opener Rohit Sharma’s batting in the first two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar stand as a lesson for Australian batsmen.
