New Delhi: Ravi Shastri, the former coach of the Indian cricket team, believes that there is no work of the vice-captain in the home series. Shastri has clearly said that if a player who is the vice-captain is not in his rhythm, then there are many problems in playing with him. Apart from this, he has advocated opener Shubman Gill for the third match of the Border-Gavaskar Test series. KL Rahul got a chance in the first two Tests but he could not show anything special. The opener batsman has scored 22, 23, 10, two, 20, 17 and one in his last seven innings. In contrast, Gill is waiting for a place in the Test team despite his impressive performances across formats.

Shastri said in the ICC Review podcast, ‘The team management knows about his (Rahul’s) form, they understand his mental state. He knows how he should look at a player like Gill. He said, ‘I have always believed that vice-captain should not be appointed while playing in India. I would prefer to take the field with a playing XI, and if for some reason the captain has to leave the field, you can give the responsibility of leading the team to another player in his absence. You don’t need to create complications by appointing a vice-captain.

Rahul was appointed vice-captain for the first two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He managed to retain his place in the team for the last two matches but has been relieved of the responsibility of vice-captain. The former India coach said, ‘If the vice-captain doesn’t perform, someone can replace him. May be my words sound too bitter but I do not like vice-captain in domestic situation. Yes, the matter is different on foreign tours.

The former all-rounder said that there is no dearth of talent in India and a player needs to keep performing consistently to retain his place in the team. He said, ‘Rahul’s form and current mindset have to be seen. He is a tremendous player, but you have to convert talent into results and keep doing well. He said, ‘There is no dearth of talent in India and there are many players who are waiting for a place in the team. I am not talking about Rahul in this, there are many strong options in the middle order and bowling lineup as well.

Shastri said that a break (rest) can be very beneficial for a player struggling with poor rhythm. “Sometimes in those situations a break is better for a player as he can work on his game and get stronger and find his place,” he added. Shastri said, ‘Pujara was dropped from the team during my tenure (coach). He came back with a century, Rahul was also dropped from the team and he made a great comeback. You cannot take the rhythm of the T20 format to Test cricket.
