Monkey Gate was one of the most controversial moments in the history of Indian and Australian cricket. This incident is of the year 2007-08 when Team India went on Australia tour. The tour saw a spat between Australian player Andrew Symonds and India spinner Harbhajan Singh during the Sydney Test, after which Symonds accused Harbhajan of making racist remarks and called him a monkey.

After this, the matter took a lot of heat. Players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman came forward for Harbhajan while for Symonds it was Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke. The seriousness of the matter can be gauged from the fact that it was investigated by the Sydney Court. Although the charge against Harbhajan could not be proved in the court, he was banned for one test.

Smith’s DRS controversy

Steve Smith’s DRS controversy was also in the limelight. In the year 2017, Australia came on a tour of India. During this there was a DRS controversy in the Bangalore Test. In fact, in the match, Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav’s ball hit the pad of Australian captain Steve Smith, after which the Indian players made a strong appeal and the umpire called Smith LBW.

Smith then took DRS but was turned down by the umpire, as video replays showed that Smith looked towards the dressing room before taking DRS and asked them to gesture, whereas according to the rules, the player should go to the dressing room before taking DRS.
