India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series by defeating Ireland by two runs on the basis of Duckworth-Lewis method in the rain-affected first T20 match on the basis of the brilliant performance of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who was returning after a long time.
Bumrah, who returned to the team after almost a year of injury, took two wickets for 24 runs, while the famous Krishna, playing his first T20 match, took two wickets for 32 runs. Ireland scored 139 runs for seven wickets with the help of number eight batsman Barry McCarthy’s unbeaten half-century.
McCarthy played an unbeaten inning of 51 runs in 33 balls with the help of four fours and four sixes. Indian captain Bumrah won the toss and decided to bowl first. Ireland had lost six wickets for 59 runs in the 11th over but after that Kurtis Campher (39) and McCarthy shared a 57-run partnership for the seventh wicket.
McCarthy completed his first half-century by hitting Arshdeep for a six off the last ball. Chasing a target of 140 runs for the win, Yashasvi Jaiswal (24 off 23 balls) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (19 not out) added 46 runs in 6.2 overs for India.
However, Craig Young gave double blow to India by sending Jaiswal and Tilak Verma (0) to the pavilion. Seeing the rain not stopping, the umpires decided to call off the game at 6:15 local time. The second T20 will be played here on Sunday.
Earlier, in the first over, Bumrah bowled opener Andrew Balbirnie (four) on the second ball, while Lorcan Tucker (0) caught Sanju Samson behind the wicket in the same over. After four overs, Bumrah handed the ball to T20 debutant Krishna, who sent Harry Tector (nine) to the pavilion. Tilak Verma took his easy catch.
Ravi Bishnoi dismissed Ireland captain Paul Stirling (11). Ireland’s four wickets fell for 27 runs in the powerplay. Krishna caught George Dockrell (three) at cover by Ruturaj Gaikwad. Campher hit a reverse sweep as soon as he arrived, while Mark Adair (16) hit two fours to take Ireland to 50 for five in nine overs.
Bishnoi sent Adair lbw after video referral and sent him to the pavilion. McCarthy hit Bishnoi for the first six of the innings in the 13th over. Bumrah was also hit for a six by Campher in the second spell while McCarthy gave advice to Krishna’s ball. Bumrah bowled an economical 19th over but Arshdeep gave away 22 runs in the last over.
