On the basis of centuries from its star batsman Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, Team India scored 397 runs in the first semi-final of the World Cup 2023 against New Zealand. Kiwi team will have to score 398 runs in 50 overs to win.
Virat Kohli has broken the world record of the great Sachin Tendulkar by scoring his 50th ODI century. Virat did this feat in front of Sachin at his home ground Wankhede Stadium.
Captain Rohit Sharma, batting first after winning the toss, also played an innings of 47 runs on 29 balls. He was out on the boundary while trying to play a big shot. But the pace of runs did not decrease.
Meanwhile, India suffered another blow in the 23rd over, when Shubman Gill got a leg strain and had to leave the field. Gill came to bat in the last over and took his score to 80 runs.
Virat Kohli scored 113 runs on 117 balls, while Iyer scored 105 runs on 70 balls. Both of them added 163 runs in 128 balls. Gill played an unbeaten inning of 80 runs on a total of 66 balls. KL Rahul remained unbeaten after scoring 39 runs on 20 balls.
Tim Southee was the most expensive but most successful bowler for New Zealand. He took three wickets for 100 runs. By completing his century on 106 balls, Kohli also took Tendulkar’s record (673 runs in 2003) of scoring most runs in a single World Cup.
New Zealand had taken DRS for LBW against Kohli in the beginning itself. Apart from this, Kiwi bowlers could not trouble him at any time. He collected his runs with ease and hit nine fours and two sixes in his innings before being caught at deep square leg off Southee’s ball.
Iyer, who scored a century in the last match, maintained his same rhythm and entertained the audience a lot by hitting sixes at his home ground Wankhede. After hitting a six on Saudi, he completed his century in 67 balls by taking one run on the next ball. This is the fastest century in the knockout stage of the World Cup.
After this, Iyer returned to the pavilion after being caught by Boult at long off, due to which India could not cross 400 runs. Iyer hit four fours and eight sixes in his innings. Rohit had shown that he will not hesitate in playing big shots by hitting two fours in the first over of Trent Boult.
He mesmerized the audience present at the Wankhede Stadium by openly displaying his ability to hit sixes targeting both Bolt and Saudi. Kane Williamson had to hand the ball to left arm spinner Mitchell Santner in the sixth over itself.
The Indian captain welcomed him with fours and sixes, but his timing was not right while hitting a high shot on Southee and Williamson ran and converted it into a catch. He hit four fours and as many sixes in his innings and broke the record of Chris Gayle (49) for hitting most sixes in the World Cup.
After Rohit’s fireworks, Gill took the responsibility. He targeted Lockie Ferguson and by hitting a six on this fast bowler, India’s score crossed 100 runs in the 13th over. Gill completed his 13th half-century in ODIs in 41 balls.
