Skipper Navjot Kaur scored a hat-trick as India continued their impressive run in the Women’s Asian Hockey 5 World Cup Qualifier, thrashing Malaysia 9-5 to book a place in the final of the tournament and qualify for next year’s World Cup. Succeeded in qualifying.
Navjot (7th, 10th and 17th minutes) scored a hat-trick while Marianna Kujur (9th, 12th minutes) and Jyoti (21st and 26th minutes) scored twice. While Monika Deepi Toppo (22nd minute) and Mahima Chaudhary (14th minute) scored one goal each. Jaiti Mohamed (4th and 5th minutes), Dian Najeri (10th and 20th minutes) and Aziz Zafirah (16th) scored for Malaysia.
The opening leg of the Hockey Fives World Cup will be played in Muscat from January 24 to 27 next year. India made a bright start to the match but Malaysia took the lead through Jaiti Mohd. A minute later the same player doubled it with a field goal. India reduced the gap two minutes later with a goal from Navjot and an in-form Kujur scored again to give India a 2-2 draw.
Both the teams were in constant attack, with Malaysia taking the lead through Najeri. India quickly counter-attacked and scored two goals in quick succession to make it 4-3. Navjot and Kujur scored the goals for India. With one minute left in the first half, Mahima Chowdhary assisted to extend the lead to 5-3. In the second half, both the teams were aggressive and looked dangerous.
Malaysia took advantage of the opportunity to reduce the gap with a goal through Zafirah. But after this India took an 8-5 lead with the help of goals from Navjot, Jyoti and Toppo. With four minutes left, Jyoti scored India’s ninth goal to face the winner of the other semi-final between Thailand and Indonesia in the final.
