India defeated Italy 5-1 and made it to the semi-finals

Salima Tete was India’s best player in the 3-1 win against New Zealand Adipose. India qualified for the semi-finals of the FIH Women’s Olympic Qualifiers in Ranchi with a 5-1 win over Italy in their last Pool B game on Tuesday evening. They will face Germany in the semi-finals on Thursday evening, where a win will ensure they qualify for the Paris Olympics.
America’s win over New Zealand meant that India would only have to avoid defeat against Italy to reach the semi-finals.
They got off to a dream start as Salima Tete won a penalty corner in the first minute and it was brilliantly converted through a powerful shot from Udita Duhan. India spent the rest of the first half laboring as they were slow in attack and also poor in their skill, as both passing and trapping let them down on several occasions. Salima then got the goal with a sensational finish from a tight angle on the right flank.
After Navneet Kaur scored her first goal of the tournament with some nice dribbling and a brilliant reverse stroke, Udita scored another goal to celebrate her 100th cap for the team. Germany will provide a tough test, as expected from the highest-ranked team in the competition. But after the setback suffered by America, India will go into it with confidence after scoring 8 goals in two matches.
