India in semi-finals of Womens T20 after quarter-final against Malaysia canceled due to rain

Hangzhou. India on Thursday entered the semi-finals of the women’s T20 cricket event at the Hangzhou Asian Games after their quarter-final against Malaysia was abandoned due to rain at the Zhejiang University of Technology Pingfeng Cricket Field on Thursday.

The toss was delayed due to rain and India, led by Smriti Mandhana, were put to bat first. Rain interrupted their innings intermittently, but India’s batsmen faced little challenge and took full advantage of the loose balls from the Malaysian bowlers.

Opener Shafali Verma hit five sixes and four fours in her aggressive innings of 67 runs off 39 balls, hitting shots all over the park and showcasing her power-hitting. She also shared a 57-run partnership for the first wicket with Smriti, who scored 27 runs in 16 balls and hit fours on full toss balls before falling in the final over of the power-play.

Jemimah Rodrigues, who shared an 86-run partnership with Shafali, came out with her big hits and remained comfortably unbeaten on 47 off 29 balls as India posted 173/2 in 15 overs with every Indian batsman on strike- The rate was above 100.

Richa Ghosh, back in the team after missing the Bangladesh tour, provided the appropriate finishing touch through her powerful shots in her innings of 21 not out off just seven balls, including three fours and a six in the final over off fast bowler Mas Alissa. The assist included 18 runs.

Malaysia faced only two balls before rain started, this time ultimately forcing the match to be abandoned. Due to the higher seeding, India managed to reach the semi-final stage, where they are expected to face either Bangladesh or Hong Kong on Sunday.
