New Delhi (Best Hindu News): Five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen has praised the emerging talent from the country and said that India will soon become the leading country in the world of chess.
Carlsen said in a release issued by the Global Chess League (GCL) on Tuesday, “I think there are a lot of things going right in India right now. It is only a matter of time before it becomes the world’s leading chess nation.”
Carlsen has been selected as the ‘Icon Player’ for the GCL to be held in Dubai from June 21 to July 2. The event is being organized under the aegis of Tech Mahindra and International Chess Federation (FIDE). GCL is the first of its kind chess league where stars from all over the world will represent six different teams.
Carlson said of GCL, “Being a part of it (GCL) is an exciting opportunity for me. Nothing like this has been done on board before. I look forward to seeing the future of this format.”
“I am looking forward to competing with and against the exciting young generation of Indian players. One of the really cool things about this tournament is that men and women can compete against each other on the same stage.”
Six teams in the league will play a total of 10-10 matches in double round-robin format. The top two teams after the conclusion of the league stage will qualify for the final on July 2, 2023 and the winner will be crowned the World Champion franchise team.
