India rises to number three in IBA’s world boxing rankings

New Delhi. India is rising fast in the world of boxing and has reached the third position in the latest world rankings of the International Boxing Association (IBA). The exceptional performance by the boxers helped India post 36,300 points, behind only Kazakhstan (48,100) and Uzbekistan (37,600). He has even surpassed top boxing powerhouse nations including countries like USA and Cuba, who are currently ranked fourth and ninth respectively in the standings.

Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh said, “It is a happy moment for India BFI, its boxers and all the fans out there. Indian boxing has made a quantum jump from 44th position to 3rd position a few years ago. BFI has been striving hard to fulfill the mission of making India a boxing powerhouse and has ensured the best facilities for sportspersons of all age groups, providing them with regular state and national championships, foreign exposure trips and necessary support systems Helped build my confidence.”

The BFI President said, this ranking will indicate India’s rapid growth as a boxing nation and also reflect its strong position in the world.

Indian boxing has seen phenomenal growth in recent years with teams consistently finishing in the top five countries in global multi-national tournaments such as the World Championships, the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. In the last two seasons of the Commonwealth Games (CWG), Indian boxers have won an unprecedented 16 medals and since 2008 Indian boxers have won 140 medals in top international competitions.

Since 2016, Indian boxers have won 16 Elite World Championship medals in both men’s and women’s categories. BFI has also hosted several big international events in the country and from March 15 to 26, they will organize the prestigious Women’s World Boxing Championships for the third time in India.

Hosting major international tournaments plays a vital role in encouraging the domestic growth of the game as well as inspiring the next generation to take up the sport. The world has already seen the hosting capabilities with the Youth Women’s World Boxing Championships in Guwahati in 2017 followed by the Elite Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi in 2018 and now we are all set to hold the third World Elite Women’s Championships.

India’s excellent performance with 22 medals in the last two Youth World Championships has extended to the junior and youth levels as well, indicating a bright future for Indian boxing.(IANS)
