Centurion. In his last Test at his home ground at the SuperSport Park here on Wednesday, veteran opener Dean Elgar single-handedly gave South Africa the lead by scoring a century on the second day of the first Test against India.
Ravichandran Ashwin took the lead twice for four runs and then completed his century with a powerful pull off Thakur for a four.
Elgar celebrated by jumping and roaring with joy. The audience appreciated his excellent innings. This was also his first Test century on home ground. He and Bedingham hit three more fours off Thakur to end the second session, making 145 runs firmly in South Africa’s favour.
The final session began with Elgar and Bedingham scoring 41 runs in the first nine overs, with Bumrah, Siraj and Thakur proving ineffective in stopping both from taking boundaries. Bedingham, who looked strong playing on the backfoot, brought up his maiden Test half-century in 80 balls, but was dismissed by Siraj for 56.
Krishna got his first Test wicket of Kyle Verreynne. The right-handed batsman tried to punch the rising short ball, but the ball went past the edge of the glove to Rahul.
Krishna hit Elgar’s gloves with the ball, leading to a break in play, giving the umpires time to assess the lighting in the stadium. The players left the field 30 minutes before the scheduled stumps time due to insufficient light to proceed. The day’s play was abandoned, which was a true credit to South Africa and Elgar.
Brief scores: India 245 in 67.4 overs (KL Rahul 101, Kagiso Rabada 5-44) trailing South Africa 256/5 in 66 overs (Dean Elgar 140 not out, David Bedingham 56; Jasprit Bumrah 2-48, Mohammed Siraj 2-61) ) by 11 runs.
