New Delhi, March 18 (Hindustan Reporter) Paris Olympics quota winners Akhil Sharon and Anish Bhanwala as well as Neeraj Kumar also performed brilliantly in Poland. Indian rifle and pistol shooters ended their Polish Grand Prix campaign with six medals, including two gold. Some members of India’s 50m rifle and 25m rapid-fire pistol team are currently on an exposure tour of Europe to compete in various international shooting events in preparation for Paris 2024.
Akhil Sheron won the gold medal for India in the second match of the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions (3P) when he shot 468.4 to leave Czech Republic’s Patrik Jenni by 2.2 at the Grand Prix Wroclawia and Dolnego Slaska. However, both of these scores were higher than the current world record of 466.1 held by Jenny’s compatriot Jiri Privatsky.
Anish Bhanwala also won gold in the men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol, continuing his golden run at the Józef Czapadzki Grand Prix held simultaneously. Navy shooter Neeraj Kumar also had an impressive performance with two bronze medals in both the men’s 3P events, making him the only Indian to finish with two medals.
Neeraj scored impressive scores of 595 and 594 in the two qualification matches. In the first match, he finished third behind Jenny and Rio Olympic silver medalist Serhiy Kulish of Ukraine. Swapnil Kusale also topped the qualification standings with a solid score of 595 in the second match, which was more accurate than Neeraj, but finished fourth overall. Sriyanka Sadangi, another Paris quota winner in the two Grand Prix, won a bronze medal in the women’s 3P and Aashi Chouksey won a silver in the second women’s 3P.
