Indian football team head coach Igor Stimac on Monday said that he will resign from his post if the Indian football team fails to reach the third round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers. Stimac’s priority is to take India to the third round of the World Cup qualifiers and get a direct entry into the AFC Asia Cup 2027.

“If I fail to take India to the third round, I will step down,” Stimac said on the eve of India’s home leg match against Afghanistan here on Tuesday. With respect for all the work I have done in the last 5 years, I will leave this position to someone else. ,

India is currently in second place in Group A with four points from three matches. They are one point ahead of Kuwait, who have three points from three matches. India can still make it to the third round but sharing points against Afghanistan in the last match has dealt a blow to its chances. Stimac took over as the head coach of India in 2019.

Last year his contract was extended till June 2026. He said he was not surprised by Afghanistan’s good performance against India as many of their players play in Europe. Stimac also called for long-term practice camps before major competitions. He said, “Only three long-term practice camps were organized during my tenure as coach.
