Asian Games champions and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalists India have been placed in a tough Pool B in the men’s hockey competition at this year’s Paris Olympic Games. Eight-time champions India ended their 41-year Olympic medal drought by winning the bronze medal in Tokyo. Along with India, Pool B includes Olympic champions and world second-ranked Belgium, extremely strong Australia, Rio Games gold medalists Argentina, New Zealand and Ireland.

India is currently ranked third in the world rankings behind Belgium and the Netherlands. It will prove difficult for the team to defeat Tokyo Olympics silver medalists Australia and Argentina. Meanwhile, Pool A comprises Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, France and South Africa. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Sunday announced the pools of the men’s and women’s hockey competitions following the completion of the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers. The Indian women’s team will not be represented in Paris. The team missed the opportunity to play in the Olympics after finishing fourth in the qualifiers in Ranchi.

In the women’s category, defending Olympic champions Netherlands have been placed in Pool A along with Belgium, Germany, Japan, China and host France while Pool B includes Australia, defending silver medalists Argentina, Britain, Spain, USA and South Africa. The teams participating in the Olympics have been allocated their respective pools based on the FIH World Rankings on Sunday.
