Indian men’s team to play in King’s Cup and Merdeka Cup before 2024 Asian Cup

Starting with the Inter-Continental Cup in June till the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November and December, All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary Shaji Prabhakaran said on Friday that the Indian men’s football team’s international calendar will be very busy. The Merdeka Cup will return to Bangkok this year along with the King’s Cup. Malaysia’s tournament, the Merdeka Cup, was a regular feature of the senior national team calendar from the 1960s until the mid-1980s.
The AIFF, in a series of decisions in its executive committee meeting, has also decided to bar foreign players from participating in I-League Division 2 along with major state leagues like Calcutta Football League (CFL), Goa League. Federation President Kalyan Choubey made this announcement while interacting with the media here. There is good news for women’s football as the minimum wage for all players participating in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) has been fixed at Rs 3.2 lakh.
Asked how the Indian men’s team is preparing for the Asian Cup finals next year, Prabhakaran said, “We are playing the Inter-Continental Cup in June and the SAFF Championship in the same month. The Indian men will then play the King’s Cup in Bangkok followed by the Merdeka Cup in October. There is a World Cup qualifier in November-December. The general secretary said there is a plan to organize a month-long camp ahead of the Asian Cup next year.
