Ranchi: In the third and fourth place match of the ongoing FIH Women’s Hockey Olympic Qualifier at Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Marang Gomke, Japan defeated India 1-0 and secured the third place and qualified for the Olympics. With this, India’s dream of reaching the Paris Olympics was shattered and the team finished fourth. In the sixth minute of the match, the team took the lead with a goal from Japanese player Urata. After this, the Indian women’s hockey team got nine penalty shootouts, which the team could not convert into goals. In the second match, New Zealand finished fifth after defeating Italy 3-1. Whereas Chile team finished seventh after defeating Czech Republic 1-0.
Italy’s disappointing game against New Zealand continues
By scoring three goals in the first three quarters, New Zealand defeated Italy 3-1 and secured fifth place. For New Zealand, Ross Tinnan scored in the seventh minute, captain Olivia Marie in the 10th and Hannah Cotter scored in the 31st minute. The only goal for Italy was scored by Ivana Pessina from a penalty corner in the 21st minute. As expected, New Zealand played aggressive hockey from the very first minute.
Fernando scored the winning goal for Chile
With the help of Fernando Villagran’s penalty stroke goal, Chile defeated Czech Republic 1-0 and secured seventh place in the FIH Women’s Hockey Olympic Qualifier. Even though Chile could not qualify for the Paris Olympics, this victory must have been a morale booster.
