Indian tennis players should focus on singles: Paes and Bhupathi

Tennis greats Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi feel that Indian players should focus on singles instead of doubles. Asked whether Indian players should focus more on doubles, Bhupathi said, “No. Why would they do this?
“Not since Ramesh Krishnan (in the mid-80s) have we had a singles quarterfinalist at a Grand Slam. We should focus on that. In doubles, we have set such a high standard that it will take decades to reach.
“You have to look at each category separately,” Paes said on the sidelines of an event organized by the US Polo Association. Be it singles, doubles or mixed doubles, it’s all tennis. One should focus on singles because that is where most fame comes.” He cited the example of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, this year’s Wimbledon champion, who has become world number one at the age of 20.
He said, “Preparing youngsters for singles is the most difficult. Look at Alcaraz who is only 20 years old and is the number one player in the world. Our kids don’t get out of juniors even at the age of 18 or 19. Then consider whether to go to college or play professional tennis. This world is different.
Bhupathi said it is wrong to assume that Indian singles players have tough times ahead. “Last year Alcaraz won a championship and this year is number one. I don’t think it would be fair to say that no Indian player will be able to play at the top level in singles.
