Indian women defeat Hong Kong in quarter-finals, ensure first medal

Shah Alam: The Indian women’s badminton team secured its first medal by reaching the semi-finals of the Badminton Asia Team Championship (BATC) by defeating Hong Kong 3-0 in the quarter-finals on Friday.
Top shuttler PV Sindhu continued her stellar form on her return from injury to give India an early lead by defeating Lo Sin Yan Happy 21-7, 16-21, 21-12.
The doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto doubled their lead with a 21-10, 21-14 win over Yung Nga Ting and Yung Pui Lam in straight games.
Then, Ashmita Chaliha put the final nail in the coffin with a 21-12, 21-13 win over Yung Sum Yee and sealed a place in the semi-finals for the team.
Medal assured, India will now face top seeded Japan in the semi-finals, which defeated China 3-2 in the other quarter-final.
The 2024 edition of the biennial continental team championship will also serve as the Asian qualifier for the 2024 Thomas & Uber Cup to be held in Chengdu, China in April-May. India is the current holder of the Thomas Cup.
The championships also provide valuable Race to Paris 2024 ranking points, which will be vital for shuttlers aspiring to compete at the upcoming Olympic Games.
