Team India’s left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gaikwad feels that the Indian women’s cricket team, which missed out on a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games, will perform brilliantly in the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China next month.
Last year, the Indian team missed out on a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games debut of women’s cricket in Birmingham, losing to Australia in the final. The team has lost three finals of major tournaments in recent years.
The Indian women’s team qualified directly for the quarterfinals of the Asian Games on the basis of the ICC (International Cricket Council) T20 International rankings. “Definitely, we will win the gold medal in the Asian Games,” Gaikwad told PTI in an interview.
Rajeshwari said, ‘We have played against all the big rival teams, but we cannot keep thinking about that, we have faith in our team, we can win the gold medal.’ Gaikwad was not part of the team on India’s last tour (against Bangladesh).
In that the team won the T20 International series 2-1 while the ODI series was tied 1-1. Gaikwad said, ‘I was in rehabilitation and resting during the Bangladesh tour. It was not that I was dropped from the team.
The spinner, who has played two Tests, 64 ODIs and 55 T20 Internationals for India, is currently busy with the Women’s Premier League team UP Warriors’ off-season camp for Indian players.
Rajeshwari said, ‘We have done a very good job in the camp. We do not need to work on any particular department but can improve those departments in which we could have done better and our focus is only on this. Our focus is on improving in all departments, including fielding, batting and bowling. Especially the batsmen have tried to work on their strokes.
